How we started
Capital Rides Initiative was born out of a simple yet profound realization: many of our Harrisburg neighbors were eligible for critical assistance programs but remained unenrolled. As community members came together to discuss the barriers faced by families in neighborhoods like Allison Hill and Uptown, a common thread emerged – the lack of accessible resources to navigate state benefits. Understanding that many of these households lacked reliable transportation, a group of passionate locals recognized a unique opportunity to leverage vehicle donations to bridge this gap.
By creating Capital Rides Initiative, we developed a sustainable funding model that empowers our community members to donate their vehicles, which in turn finances a free benefits-research service. This service connects local residents to vital resources such as SNAP, PA Medical Assistance, TANF, WIC, and LIHEAP. Today, we continue to grow, driven by the belief that no one should be without the support they qualify for.
