Capital Rides Initiative makes donating a car in the Harrisburg Metro simple: we come to you with a truly free pickup. Whether you’re in Midtown, Allison Hill, Uptown, or out toward Colonial Park, Mechanicsburg, or Enola, you can donate a running or non-running vehicle without paying a dime for towing. Our pickups are handled by local flatbed and hook-and-chain operators, and the cost is covered by the charity’s sale proceeds—never billed back to you.
Here’s how it works in Harrisburg: you call us or fill out our online form, we confirm some quick details about your car and your location, then schedule a pickup window that fits your week. On the day of pickup, you simply leave the signed Pennsylvania title and keys in an agreed spot with the vehicle—driveway, curb, lot, or garage access. A local towing partner from the Harrisburg area typically arrives within a few business days, depending on routing and how far you are from the city center. From Downtown and Paxtang to Dillsburg or Halifax, we coordinate everything so your donation to support people who are blind or visually impaired is convenient and genuinely hassle‑free.
How to schedule your free local pickup
1. Tell us about your car and where it sits
Call Capital Rides Initiative or submit the online form with your contact info, vehicle details, and exact location in the Harrisburg area—whether that’s Shipoke, Progress, Linglestown, Camp Hill, or beyond. Let us know if the car runs, if it’s in a driveway, on the street, or in a garage, and share any parking or access notes so we can match you with the right local tow truck.
2. Choose a convenient local pickup window
Our team reviews your information and offers available pickup windows based on Harrisburg Metro tow routes. In-town addresses near Downtown or Midtown are often scheduled slightly faster than very rural spots north or west of the city. You pick a day and time window that works, and we confirm by phone or email so you know when to expect the truck.
3. Prepare the Pennsylvania title and keys
Before pickup, sign your Pennsylvania vehicle title as the seller according to PennDOT rules, and remove your personal items from the car. You can usually keep or surrender your PA plates per state guidelines. On the day of pickup, place the keys and signed title in the agreed secure location—often in the vehicle, under a floor mat, or with a building office if needed.
4. Leave the car accessible for the tow truck
Make sure the vehicle is reachable by a flatbed or standard tow truck—clear any obstacles and, if it’s in a gated lot or garage in places like Downtown Harrisburg or the West Shore, arrange access or gate codes in advance. The driver will load the vehicle from your driveway, street spot, or lot, even if it doesn’t start, has flat tires, or has been sitting for a long time.
5. We pick it up for $0 and send your tax receipt
A local towing partner arrives during your scheduled window, usually within a few business days across the Harrisburg Metro. There is no towing charge to you—ever. After your vehicle is sold to benefit Heritage for the Blind, we mail you a donation receipt, typically for at least $500; for donations over $500, you’ll also receive the IRS Form 1098‑C for your tax records.
Local pickup gotchas
Flatbed access on tight Harrisburg streets
Tip: Some streets in Midtown, Allison Hill, and Shipoke are narrow or heavily parked, which can complicate flatbed access. If your car is on a tight block, we may ask you to move it to a nearby cross street, alley entrance, or lot where a tow truck can safely load without blocking traffic or violating city parking rules.
Gated communities, garages, and parking decks
Tip: In apartment complexes, HOAs, or parking garages in Downtown Harrisburg, Camp Hill, or Susquehanna Township, drivers can be delayed by missing gate codes or office contacts. Share gate codes, garage height limits, and any required parking passes when you schedule. If a fob or card is needed, coordinate a way for the tow operator to access it without you being onsite.
Very rural addresses beyond the core metro
Tip: Pickups in more rural parts of Dauphin, Cumberland, Perry, or Lebanon counties—such as Halifax, Shermans Dale, or rural Boiling Springs—may take an extra day or two. Tow trucks group nearby stops to manage long drives and limited cell coverage. Be flexible on your pickup window, and we’ll still ensure the service is completely free to you.
Permit or timed street parking rules
Tip: In some Harrisburg neighborhoods and boroughs with permit zones or street‑sweeping schedules, leaving a car too long can risk tickets. Tell us if your spot is time‑limited or permit‑only so we can time the tow properly. If needed, we may suggest shifting the car to a driveway, friend’s property, or a more forgiving side street before pickup.
If at-home pickup is tricky
If a standard at-home tow is tricky—maybe your car is deep in a tight alley, wedged in a low-clearance garage, or your HOA is strict about visible tow trucks—we can often arrange alternatives. In many parts of the Harrisburg Metro, including Mechanicsburg, Lemoyne, and Lower Paxton Township, we may be able to meet you at a nearby public lot, workplace, or service station where a flatbed can safely load. When you call or submit the form, explain your situation and location specifics, and we’ll work with you to find the easiest local option that still keeps your donation completely free.
Harrisburg pickup coverage
Capital Rides Initiative serves the entire Harrisburg area, from Downtown, Midtown, and Uptown to Paxtang, Colonial Park, Lower Swatara, and the West Shore communities like Camp Hill, New Cumberland, and Mechanicsburg. We also reach outlying Pennsylvania towns such as Hershey, Hummelstown, and Millersburg, with pickups usually within a few business days depending on distance from the city. In Pennsylvania, you’ll sign your title as the seller and typically remove your plates before the tow; plates can often be returned to PennDOT or transferred. Our team can walk you through the basic PA title steps, though we don’t provide legal or tax advice.
